The Iowa State Fair has been on my list for a long time and I finally made it. Any fair that merits an entire musical from Rogers and Hammerstein deserves a visit.
State fairs are only partially about amusement. They are also important venues for the farming that sustains our nation. A recent food podcaster said that 4H wasn't as active as it used to be---that person clearly hasn't visited the Midwest. Both 4H and Future Farmers of America were very visible with demonstrations of the educational efforts of their participants. I saw all sorts of animals and vegetables proudly displayed.
I saw equipment, both antique and new.
I saw the famous butter cow, an Iowa State Fair tradition.
And of course I enjoyed food on sticks.
Thanks to everyone and congratulations on a great fair!
