Lincoln NE: Amigos

Amigos is a local chain in Lincoln. The Mexican menu is paired with King's Classic burgers. Many locations also include Winchell's Donuts and Kopeli Coffee. I needed a quick, fairly light lunch and decided this was my opportunity to try Amigos. My cheese enchilada was delivered to my table by the friendly counterperson a few minutes after my order. It hit the spot: flavorful sauce, good cheese, nice tortilla. I declared the lunch a success.

A Stop at McDonald's

I haven't been to McDonald's for something like a decade. I needed a spot to stop my drive and make a call. McDonald's fit the bill and the chance to see what one looks like these days was intriguing. A set of kiosks stood near the line. Some people used them to order; I spoke with a very friendly pair of staffers. My coffee was fine. The fried apple pie has always been a treat. The new version, it turns out, has a lattice top rather than a solid top, depriving me of a bit of that wonderful fried pie crust flavor. Memories...

The Varsity

I apologize for taking so long to review the Varsity. It's one of those places that you know will always be there. My latest meal there consisted of the grilled chicken sandwich and onion rings. The Varsity is not known for its diet food, but the grilled chicken sandwich was pretty good. But I made up for my healthy habits with their excellent onion rings. These are handmade, not manufactured in a factory. But I would like to know what happened to their barbeque sandwich. That was my favorite sandwich on the menu, but I noticed recently that it's no longer there. Whether thou art, Varsity BBQ?

Zesto

Why has it taken me so long to write about Zesto? I don't know, it just sems like one of those places that has always been here and always will be. Zesto is one of the first places I ate at in Atlanta. Not only was the fried chicken excellent, but the lady who served it to me was very motherly. Gabe Loh tells me that Zesto started out as a national chain that went belly up. The Atlanta restaurants are the local remnant. There are other survivors in different cities, each having evolved independently into their own species. Our Zesto chain has a much larger menu than one sees in the big chain fast food places: nachos, wings, burgers, fried chicken. On this visit, I had the wings, which came with all the appropriate accompaniments. They are plenty spicy---I had to wash off my face in the rest room to get rid of the sting. On other visits, I've had the burgers, fried chicken, and some excellent onion rings, but I still haven't made it through the whole menu. That...
